Gary Black Jr., Ph.D., is Professor of Theology at Azusa Pacific University. Prior to joining APU, Black enjoyed a successful business career as a partner in an international Wall Street investment firm. As a result, he brings a unique blend of real-world corporate leadership experience to his field of theological study. His Ph.D. dissertation (The Theology and Praxis of Dallas Willard: Discovering _Protoevangelical Faith_, Wipf and Stock, 2013), was the first to organize and track the influence of Willardian theology.
Black’s passions lie in helping current and future church leaders and disciples better understand and navigate the evolving realities of our world while discovering and achieving their own discipleship to Jesus through the process of spiritual transformation into the Kingdom of God.

Gary met Dr. Willard in 1991. He worked closely with Willard to complete his PhD dissertation mentioned above, and they were collaborating on three additional writing projects at the time of Willard’s death: The Divine Conspiracy Continued (HarperOne, 2014), which expands and continues the themes presented in The Divine Conspiracy; Preparing for Heaven (HarperOne, October 2015) which reveals his conversations with Willard on the topics of heaven and eternal life; and Renewing the Christian Mind (HarperOne, 2016), for which Black is the editor.
