Practicing the Presence of God

Highlights:

  • Cosmic Drama of Everyday Life: Dallas opens by reframing everyday life as part of God's eternal cosmic plan, emphasizing that every individual is an eternal, never-dying spirit. He challenges listeners to see their lives as paintbrushes on God's canvas, contributing to the most glorious universe possible.
  • Creation Covenant: Introducing the concept of the creation covenant from Genesis, Dallas explains that humans were created to rule and produce good in partnership with God. He asserts that even in a fallen world, the covenant remains unbroken and is fulfilled through God's manifest presence in our lives.
  • Significance of Family and Community: Drawing parallels between the Trinity and human relationships, Dallas highlights that humanity is created as a community, not as isolated individuals. He stresses the importance of families as the heart of human community and as training grounds for living in love and cooperation.
  • Practicing the Presence Through Acknowledgement: Dallas offers practical guidance on practicing God's presence, starting with mentally and verbally acknowledging His presence in daily life. He explains how focusing the mind on God creates a habit of awareness that brings the reality of His presence into every moment.
  • Transformative Power of Thankfulness: Thankfulness, according to Dallas, is a vital practice for experiencing God's presence. He encourages constant gratitude, not for obligatory reasons, but for genuine aspects of life, as this aligns the heart with God's goodness and opens the door to His manifest presence.
  • The Visibility of God’s Presence: Dallas shares the story of Moses and other biblical figures to illustrate how God's presence becomes visible through those who live in it. He suggests that believers, too, are designed to radiate God's glory, becoming a beacon of hope and transformation for others.
  • Manifest Presence in Action: Highlighting the practical impact of God's presence, Dallas describes how it empowers believers to accomplish good beyond their natural abilities. He recounts examples of individuals and communities whose actions, guided by God's presence, brought healing and renewal in dire circumstances.
  • Three Steps to Practice God’s Presence: Dallas concludes with a practical framework: (1) Acknowledge God's presence, (2) Practice constant thankfulness, and (3) Invoke God into every aspect of life. These steps, he assures, lead to a life filled with divine guidance, strength, and joy, enabling believers to live in the Kingdom of God.

Bringing the Kingdom into Our Life

Highlights:

  • Gentleness of God: Dallas explains how the gentleness of God is reflected in His interactions with humanity, such as asking Adam and Eve, "Where are you?" instead of forcefully exposing their hiding. This illustrates God's respect for human freedom and His desire for a loving, voluntary relationship with His creation.
  • Manifest Presence of God: Dallas highlights the difference between God's omnipresence and His manifest presence. While God is present everywhere, His manifest presence is invited and desired, reminding us of the relational aspect of faith and the beauty of seeking God's face.
  • Spiritual Reality Defined: Spiritual being, Dallas asserts, is "unbodily personal power" that exists independently of physical matter. He encourages listeners to rethink their conception of spirit, emphasizing its creative and relational aspects as foundational to understanding God and ourselves.
  • Human Freedom and Divine Choice: God's choice to create a world where His will could be resisted was an act of profound love, allowing humans to exercise free will. This freedom, while leading to human disobedience, also enables the creation of meaningful relationships and a world of immense value.
  • The Kingdom of God is Now: Dallas emphasizes that the Kingdom of God is not just a future reality but a present one, available to everyone through Jesus Christ. This Kingdom represents God's effective care and rule, inviting us to live under His governance and experience transformation.
  • The Redemption Response: Through Jesus, God initiates a redemptive response to human disobedience, bridging the gap between humanity and Himself. Dallas underscores how Jesus's life, death, and resurrection make the Kingdom accessible, emphasizing the need for individual trust and action in response.
  • The Rush to the Kingdom: Dallas describes the urgency and determination of those who press into the Kingdom, comparing them to a blind man crying out for Jesus’s attention. This passionate pursuit demonstrates the kind of active faith required to embrace the Kingdom's fullness.
  • Eternal Perspective: Dallas urges listeners to plan for their eternal future, reminding them that existence extends far beyond physical death. By living with eternity in view, we align our priorities with the eternal weight of glory that God has prepared for those in His Kingdom.

Bringing Our Life into the Kingdom

Highlights:

  • Living in the Manifest Presence of God: Dallas addresses the question of suffering in a world where Christians are promised deliverance. He explains that even in pain or death, God’s greater purpose ensures a better outcome for those who trust Him, rooted in a reality larger than the visible world.
  • The Larger World of God’s Kingdom: Through scripture from Hebrews 12, Dallas paints a vivid picture of the eternal spiritual realm that surrounds us. He emphasizes the race of life as one set within the eternal context, urging us to run with endurance while fixing our eyes on Jesus.
  • The Complexity of the Human Self: Dallas explains the interplay between body, soul, and spirit, describing the soul as the integrative center of our being. He highlights the soul’s role in shaping behavior and stresses the need for discipleship to reprogram ingrained tendencies.
  • Transforming Through Spiritual Disciplines: He introduces spiritual disciplines such as prayer, solitude, and fasting as essential practices for reorienting the inner self. These disciplines help replace sinful habits with righteousness, enabling a deeper alignment with God’s Kingdom.
  • Discipleship as Training, Not Trying: Dallas redefines discipleship as learning to live as Jesus would if He were us. This perspective transforms discipleship into a practical, personalized journey of aligning our lives with the life of Jesus.
  • Prayer as a Transformative Practice: Highlighting the power of prayer, Dallas shows how it transforms relationships and circumstances. He explains that prayer brings God into the center of our challenges, reshaping our responses to align with His purposes.
  • The Destiny of Reigning with Christ: Drawing from Revelation 22, Dallas concludes by casting a vision of the ultimate fulfillment of God’s Kingdom. He inspires listeners to see themselves as part of the healing of nations and as future co-heirs reigning with Christ.
