Virtue Walk Workshop

Changing Your Life with Jesus

Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness, and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. (2 Peter 1:5-8)

Dallas has said and written that 2 Peter 1:5-8 has the best description in scripture of the process of Christian Spiritual Formation. He has created the concept of V.I.M. (Vision, Intention, Means) to help us grow into spiritual maturity in Christ.  We will study the 8 dimensions in verses 5-8, adding to our unformed Faith (1) the qualities of Goodness (2), Knowledge (3), Self-Control (4), Perseverance (5), Godliness (6) Brotherly/Sisterly Love (7) and Agape Love (8). This passage promises a walk with Jesus that is assured to be productive and effective in experiencing the glory and goodness of his own life. Each of the eight dimensions involve the VIM steps and we will apply them to our walk with Jesus in these areas.

This workshop will be in sessions over 9 weeks starting the week of June 24 and ending the week of August 26, 2024.  This will be limited to 20 participants so that there is time for interaction for all who choose to share experiences and journeys, ask questions and provide insights.  Sharing is encouraged but optional in regards to your personal use of the material in your life. In the course of a 75-minute session there will be a teaching on the text and the 8 dimensions as well as guided disciplines and exercises to practice.

Peter’s promise in this passage is that if we continue in these dimensions we will experience a whole new life that will bring a sense of God’s pervading love and a confident peace to our following Jesus’ call to imitate him in loving others.  We will find that working in one area of life with Jesus, the Spirit will lift the other areas of our life into the fullness of Kingdom living.  This will eventually result in a rich welcome for us into his arms in the Kingdom to come and no fear of falling as we walk with him through whatever life brings us.

The instructor, Dr. Keith Meyer, is the author of Whole Life Transformation: Becoming the Change Your Church Needs and Spiritual Rhythms in Community: Practicing the Presence of God Together as well as a contributor with Dallas Willard and others in The Kingdom Life: A Practical Theology of Spiritual Formation and Discipleship, and a Pastor for 46 years, ordained in the Evangelical Covenant Church with experience in small and large Churches, and an Adjunct Professor of Spiritual Formation at Denver Seminary.  He has worked with churches from a broad spectrum of traditions, Quakers to Anglicans, Southern Baptists to Methodists.

The weekly meeting day and time will be determined once we have the 20 participants.  Please contact Keith Meyer to express your interest in this class and let him know days and times that work with your schedule. The class is free to all, registration is required and closes June 24, 2024.  If there is interest in the class and it fills up, another class will be offered in the fall of 2024.
