1: What's Good About Good Friday? Part 1

Part one of three-parts from a sermon explaining how Good Friday can be called "Good." Here Dallas reflects on his efforts to understand this when he was a child, and explains some theories of atonement. "The atonement has many dimensions, and the important thing to understand is that it is a living principle for today, because Good Friday lives with the cross. And the cross becomes the symbol of the goodness of God, and that is why Good Friday is GOOD Friday."

2: What's Good About Good Friday? Part 2

Jesus very carefully planned his death; you don’t want to think of him as a victim. He was playing Pilate and the other authorities like a great artist plays the piano. He was in charge and he had carefully worked this out with the other members of the Trinitarian community. To dig deeper into these concepts, read Dallas's "The Craftiness of Christ."

3: What's Good About Good Friday? Part 3

Good Friday gives us a window into how God triumphs over everything. The cross is the doorway into eternal life; into a life beyond this life that is now, strangely, present within this life – an eternal life that we take with us wherever we go.

What's Good About Good Friday? Part 1

When discussing theories of atonement, we want to distinguish between the fact and the theories that we may generate to make the fact intelligible to ourselves.

"The atonement has many dimensions, and the important thing to understand is that it is a living principle for today, because Good Friday lives with the cross. And the cross becomes the symbol of the goodness of God, and that is why Good Friday is GOOD Friday."

What's Good About Good Friday? Part 2

Key Points:

  • What happened at the cross.
  • Jesus was in charge and he had this carefully worked out with the other members of the Trinitarian community.
  • What was happening was a revelation of the best human beings can do.
  • The Jewish people provided the best teaching that has ever been brought into human history.
  • When human goodness is pushed, it always turns to doing what is wrong. If all you have is human goodness, you need a cross.
