Christ in the Marketplace

April 18-20, 1991
Hawaiian Islands Ministries Conference

This three-day conference dealing with "Christ in the Marketplace" was hosted by Rev. Dan Chun and his organization, Hawaiian Islands Ministries, and held at the Ilikai Hotel in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Dallas presents a compelling vision of discipleship that goes beyond sin management and addresses the practicalities of living in God's kingdom today. He explores how Jesus’ ordinary life as a carpenter demonstrates that the gospel is for everyone, not just religious figures, and redefines the Kingdom of God as a pervasive reality that encompasses all aspects of life. Dallas discusses the invitation to rest in Christ, challenging misconceptions about the gospel being limited to doctrinal beliefs and emphasizing spiritual disciplines as tools for embracing Jesus’ "easy yoke."

Walking in the Yoke with Jesus Today

Highlights:

  • Jesus’ Life as an Ordinary Worker: Most of Jesus’ life was spent as a carpenter, an ordinary existence that shows the gospel is for everyone, not only religious professionals.
  • The True Meaning of the Kingdom: The Kingdom of Heaven is not confined to church buildings but encompasses every aspect of life. Jesus’ gospel proclaims God’s rule over all things and invites people to live in that Kingdom now.
  • The Invitation to Rest: The call to “come unto me” is addressed to all working people, not only the desperate. It is an invitation to set aside self-reliance and enter into rest with Christ.
  • Misunderstanding the Gospel: The message of Jesus was not a gospel of sin management. Instead, it was the invitation to live in the Kingdom of God here and now.
  • Discipleship as Apprenticeship: Discipleship is defined as learning to live as Jesus would if He were in our place.
  • The Importance of Spiritual Disciplines: Spiritual disciplines are essential for taking on Jesus’ easy yoke. These practices open the way to receive His life more fully and follow His overall way of living.
  • The Gospel of Life, Not Just Doctrine: The gospel of Jesus is about God’s power over life and death, not merely a set of doctrines. Trusting Jesus in daily life brings real experience of the Kingdom in the present.
  • Following Jesus in Everyday Life: Looking at how Jesus spent His time—such as solitude and serving others—provides a pattern for transformation. Emulating His practices allows life in the Kingdom to become a present reality.

Called to the Keeping of the Heart: A Look at Ethics and Integrity

Highlights:

  • Role of the Heart: The heart is not merely an organ or a metaphor but the central control center of life. It governs acceptance, rejection, and the moral choices that shape character.
  • The Hidden Glory of God: God’s glory fills creation, yet is partially veiled in cooperation with human tendencies to hide. Perceiving it fully requires an intentional, seeking spirit.
  • Interaction Between Heart and Spirit: The spirit offers the heart opportunities to respond to God. When open, the heart can be guided toward integrity and goodness under divine influence.
  • Living Beyond Appearances: Focusing on appearances undermines ethical integrity. A life lived for others’ approval leads to contradiction and inconsistency.
  • Hardened Hearts and Spiritual Blindness: A heart consumed by personal agendas becomes hardened and spiritually blind. Such a condition makes it difficult to perceive God’s actions and presence.
  • Necessity of Community in Spiritual Growth: Genuine transformation of the heart requires community. Others help reveal blind spots and support ongoing growth.
  • Deceptiveness of the Heart: The heart is capable of profound self-deception. Repentance, self-examination, and openness to God’s scrutiny are necessary safeguards.
  • True Integrity as Christlikeness: Real integrity flows from a heart aligned with Jesus. When transformed, life consistently reflects Christ’s character in every context—personal, relational, and professional.

Called to the Gift of the Kingdom: Living the 23rd Psalm

Highlights:

  • The Kingdom is Here: The Kingdom of God is a present reality, surrounding life in every moment. Recognizing the spiritual realm’s active presence transforms ordinary living.
  • Life Without Fear: The 23rd Psalm illustrates that life in the Kingdom means freedom from fear. God’s provision addresses anxieties over sickness, finances, and even death.
  • Learning Life in the Spirit: Jesus prepared His disciples to live in the unseen Kingdom by teaching them to recognize the Spirit’s presence. The same learning is available today, enabling life in the Spirit’s power.
  • The Reality of God’s Power: Biblical stories reveal God’s power as both dangerous and life-giving. That same energy remains accessible, calling for reverence and engagement.
  • Angels Among Us: Angels serve as ministering spirits for believers. Though often unseen, their role is an essential part of God’s ongoing work with humanity.
  • Experiencing the Light of Christ: The Transfiguration revealed Jesus’ divine nature in radiant light. This light represents God’s glory, which can also be experienced through faith.
  • Fasting as Feasting on God: Fasting is reframed as feasting on God’s sustenance. By relying on spiritual nourishment rather than physical food, disciples learn deeper dependence on Him.
