Dallas offers a transformative vision for pastoral leadership rooted in spiritual formation and Christlike character. Across four sessions, he challenges pastors to move beyond performance and appearances, instead embracing the deep, inner formation of the soul as the central work of ministry. Dallas begins by exploring the divine calling and spiritual resources available to pastors, grounding ministry in an interactive relationship with the Trinity.
The series then unfolds with profound insight into the nature of character, personality, and transformation. Dallas addresses the often-ignored complexities of human nature and how genuine change happens—not through willpower or strategy, but through a Spirit-led reordering of the self. He concludes by urging churches to realign their structures and activities around the goal of Christlike character, making spiritual formation the organizing principle of congregational life.
The Kern Family Foundation was established in 1998 with a goal of empowering the rising generation of Americans to build flourishing lives anchored in strong character. Because the founders of the foundation believe that healthy local churches led by capable, committed pastors impact character formation in unique and positive ways, they designed a ministry program to equip pastors to lead healthy churches. This was the first of several conferences intended to foster the formation of Christian character in congregations served by Kern Pastors in the USA. Forty young Kern pastors and their spouses attended. In preparation, the participants were given a pre-conference reading assignment of 2 books by Henri Nouwen: Creative Ministry, and The Way of the Heart, and Dallas’s book The Spirit of the Disciplines. Fred Oaks, one of the conference organizers, shared a sweet summary of the conference in his 2013 memorial tribute to Dallas.
The conference was held at Green Lake Conference Center in Green Lake, WI. See the schedule below for the complete titles Dallas gave each session (we've left out the subtitles on our list here).
